Abstract

Malaria remains one of Africa’s most persistent public health burdens, accounting for a disproportionate share of the world’s malaria-related illness and deaths. From the first microscopic identification of Plasmodium parasites to today’s advances in genomics and vaccine development, Africa has been both the heart of the disease and the centre of global efforts to understand and control it. The continent’s diverse ecological landscapes, genetic diversity, and complex socio-political realities have continually shaped interactions between the parasite, the human host, and the mosquito vector. Over time, African scientists, institutions, and communities have moved beyond being passive subjects of research to becoming active drivers of malaria science. Their contributions now span epidemiology, molecular and genomic studies, pharmacogenomics, and vaccine innovation. This review charts the evolution of malaria research from its microscopic beginnings to modern genomic breakthroughs, highlighting how Africa’s challenges, insights, and innovations have reshaped global knowledge of the disease. It underscores the critical need for locally led research, robust surveillance systems, and context responsive policies to ensure that genomic discoveries are translated into effective, equitable, and sustainable malaria control and elimination strategies across the continent.
